ClearPen is an AI humanizer with a built-in AI detector. You paste a draft, ClearPen rewrites it into natural, readable prose, and it shows you an AI-detection score for the text before and after — for the document as a whole and for every individual sentence. You see where the draft reads as machine-written, what the rewrite did about it, and whether it actually helped.
That last part is the point. Most AI humanizers are a black box: text goes in, different text comes out, and you are asked to trust that it is better. ClearPen is built to be checked, not taken on faith.
What Does ClearPen Do?
ClearPen does two jobs in one workspace.
1. It refines writing. ClearPen rewrites the phrasing and rhythm of a draft so it reads the way a person writes: varied sentence length, less predictable word choice, fewer of the stock transitions that language models lean on. Your argument, facts, structure and headings stay where they were.
2. It measures the result. A built-in AI detector scores your text before the rewrite and again after it. You get a document score and a score for every sentence, colour-coded so the lines that still read as AI-written are obvious at a glance.
Together, those two jobs answer the question every writer using AI actually has: does this read like me, and how do I know?
Who Uses ClearPen?
ClearPen is built for people who write for a living or write for work:
- Content writers and agencies who draft with AI and need copy that reads naturally before it reaches a client or editor. See ClearPen for content writers.
- Marketers and business teams producing emails, landing pages, reports and proposals at volume. See ClearPen for business.
- Researchers and analysts writing reports and white papers where terminology and references must stay exact. See ClearPen for researchers.
- Non-native English writers, whose careful, formal English is flagged as AI far more often than native writing. See ClearPen for ESL writers.
The common thread is the false-positive problem: AI detectors regularly flag text that a human wrote or substantially shaped. We covered the research in AI detection false positives.
ClearPen's Core Features
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Before-and-after AI score | Scores the input and the output with the same detector so improvement is measured, not claimed. |
| Sentence-level heatmap | Tints every sentence by its own AI probability in both the input and the output. |
| Spot Fix | Click one flagged sentence and rewrite only that sentence. You are charged only if its score improves. |
| Protected text | Lock exact words, names, quotes or terms so they pass through every stage unchanged. |
| Already-human check | If your input already reads as human, the run stops before rewriting and nothing is charged. |
| Input protection | If a rewrite would score worse than your original, you get your original back. |
| Strength levels | Gentle, Balanced and Max control how much of the text is rewritten. |
| Deep Clean | On Pro and Power, runs up to three times more rewriting passes in parallel on stubborn text and keeps the best. |
| US or UK spelling | The final polish follows the spelling convention you choose. |
| Free AI detector | Check any text from 10 to 5,000 words at clearpen.ai/ai-detector, no signup. |
| Citation generator | APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard and IEEE references from a DOI, ISBN, URL, PDF or pasted text. |
| Humanize API | Run the same humanizer from your own tools on Pro and Power plans. |
Each of these has its own deep dive, linked in the sections below.
How Does ClearPen Work?
ClearPen is not a single prompt sent to a chatbot. It is a multi-stage pipeline:
- Score first. Your text is scored before anything is rewritten. If it already reads as human, ClearPen stops there.
- Split into blocks. The document is divided into flow-preserving blocks of roughly 250 words, never mid-sentence, with headings passed through untouched.
- Rewrite in layers. Each block goes through several rewriting stages. Sentences are scored individually, and the heaviest rewriting is applied only to the sentences that still read as AI.
- Repair and polish. A minimal-edit grammar pass fixes anything the rewriting stages disturbed, followed by a final grammar and spelling polish in US or UK English.
- Score again and compare. The result is scored, compared against your original, and only returned if it is an improvement.
Block-based processing matters for long documents. Tools that rewrite a whole document at once tend to fix the beginning and run out of attention by the end — the result "starts human and ends robotic." Working block by block gives the last paragraph the same treatment as the first. The full walkthrough is in How ClearPen's humanizer works.
What Makes ClearPen Different From Other AI Humanizers?
Most humanizers compete on a promise. ClearPen competes on evidence.
It shows the score, not a slogan. You see the before and after numbers on your own text, every time, from the same detector. You can also check any text for free before paying for anything. Read more in Why ClearPen shows a before-and-after AI score.
It works at the sentence level. A single document score hides where the problem is. ClearPen's heatmap shows exactly which sentences read as AI, and Spot Fix lets you rewrite just those.
It is careful with your words. You can protect exact text so product names, quotes, figures and legal wording are never touched.
It does not charge for nothing. ClearPen will not bill you to rewrite text that already reads as human, will not hand back a rewrite that scores worse than your original, and Spot Fix only charges when the sentence improves. See ClearPen's fair-billing safeguards.
It makes no promises it cannot keep. No tool controls what a third-party detector reports. ClearPen tells you so plainly and gives you a measured reference point instead.

How Much Does ClearPen Cost?
ClearPen has a free plan with a monthly word allowance and no credit card required. Paid plans — Starter, Pro and Power — add more words per month, longer documents per request, the Balanced and Max strength levels, unlimited citations, and on Pro and Power, Deep Clean, request history and the Humanize API. Annual billing is cheaper than monthly, and one-time word packs are available if you need extra words in a busy month without changing plan.
Current prices and limits are always on the pricing page.
Is Using ClearPen Allowed?
ClearPen changes how writing reads; it does not change who wrote it. Use it where AI assistance is permitted, follow your organization's or client's policies on AI use and disclosure, and make sure the substance of what you publish is yours. ClearPen is built to help honest writers present their own work clearly and avoid unfair AI flags.

Frequently asked questions
- What is ClearPen?
- ClearPen is a web-based AI writing-refinement tool with a built-in AI detector. It rewrites AI-assisted drafts so they read naturally, keeps the meaning, and shows an AI-detection score for the text before and after, including a score for every sentence.
- Is ClearPen free?
- Yes. ClearPen has a free plan with a monthly word allowance and no credit card required. Paid plans add more words, longer requests, the Balanced and Max strength levels, and features such as Deep Clean and the Humanize API. Current details are on clearpen.ai/pricing.
- How is ClearPen different from other AI humanizers?
- Most humanizers return rewritten text and ask you to trust it. ClearPen scores your text before and after with the same detector, highlights every sentence by its own AI probability, lets you rewrite a single sentence with Spot Fix (charged only if it improves), lets you lock exact wording so it is never changed, and does not charge you when your text already reads as human.
- Who is ClearPen for?
- Content writers, marketers, agencies, business teams, researchers and analysts, and non-native English writers — anyone who uses AI to help draft, or whose own writing gets flagged as AI, and wants the final text to read naturally and in their own voice.
- Does ClearPen guarantee a result on other AI detectors?
- No. Third-party detectors are separate systems that change without notice and often disagree with each other. ClearPen shows you its own before-and-after score as a reference point; it does not promise what another tool will report.
- What languages does ClearPen support?
- English, with a choice of US or UK spelling. Text in other languages is returned unchanged rather than rewritten badly.
- Does ClearPen have an API?
- Yes. Pro and Power plans include the Humanize API: a single authenticated POST endpoint that returns the rewritten text with AI scores before and after. Documentation is at clearpen.ai/docs/api.
