There is a quiet problem with how most AI humanizers bill. They charge for every word you paste in, whether or not the rewrite was needed and whether or not it helped. ClearPen is built so that you pay for improvement, not for activity.
The "Already Reads as Human" Check
Before ClearPen rewrites anything, it scores your text with its built-in AI detector. The result appears within a few seconds.
If the text already reads as human — an AI score of 20% or lower — ClearPen stops before the rewrite begins. You will see:
- "Already reads as human", with your score.
- A note confirming that the rewrite was skipped and none of your words were used.
- If any individual sentences still lean AI, how many — so you know whether a targeted fix is worthwhile.
- Two choices: Humanize anyway, or Keep it as is.
Why This Exists
When we added this check, the data was striking: a large share of humanizer runs were on text that already read as human. That makes sense. People run their own writing through a humanizer after a detector flags something else, or just to be safe. Charging them to rewrite text that did not need it would be billing for nothing — and rewriting good writing can only make it less theirs.
The green-band cutoff is the same one the dashboard uses to colour your score, so the text ClearPen shows as human is exactly the text it declines to charge for.
Spot Fix: Pay Only When the Sentence Improves
After a run, every sentence is colour-coded by its AI probability. If a few still stand out, Spot Fix rewrites only the sentence you choose and re-scores it.
The billing rule is simple: the sentence's words are charged only if its score goes down. If the rewrite does not help, the attempt is free. You never pay to rerun a 1,500-word document to fix one line.
A Result That Never Scores Worse Than Your Original
Rewriting is not guaranteed to help every text. Short passages packed with names, figures and references leave little room to rewrite, and occasionally a rewrite reads as more machine-like than the original.
ClearPen compares every result against your input. If the rewrite would score worse, ClearPen returns your original text and tells you so, with practical next steps: try again (each run differs), raise the strength, or protect only the exact phrases that must stay rather than whole sentences.
The result: ClearPen's after score never reads higher than your before score.

Why We Built ClearPen This Way
An AI humanizer that charges per word has an incentive to rewrite everything, every time. ClearPen is designed the other way round: score first, rewrite only when it helps, charge only for improvement, and show the evidence on every run. It is the same principle behind the before-and-after score — built to be checked, not taken on faith.

Frequently asked questions
- Does ClearPen charge if my text is already human?
- No. ClearPen scores your text before rewriting. If it scores 20% AI or lower, the run stops before any rewriting, no words are used, and you are offered the choice to humanize anyway or keep the text as it is.
- What happens if ClearPen's rewrite scores worse than my original?
- ClearPen returns your original text unchanged and explains that the rewrite scored worse, with suggestions for a better second attempt. A ClearPen result never scores higher than the text you started with.
- Does ClearPen charge for failed sentence rewrites?
- No. Spot Fix, which rewrites a single sentence, only uses that sentence's words if its AI score goes down. Attempts that do not improve the sentence are free.
- Do I need a subscription to use ClearPen?
- No. The free plan includes a monthly word allowance with no credit card. Paid plans are available monthly or annually, and subscribers can add one-time word packs in a busy month instead of upgrading.
- Why do so many AI humanizer runs happen on text that is already human?
- Because people often run their own writing through a humanizer after a detector flagged it, or as a precaution. When ClearPen introduced its pre-check, a large share of runs turned out to be on text that already read as human. Charging to rewrite that text would be charging for nothing.
